Green Committee: Food Services & Purchasing Presentation
Hotels produce 289,700 tonne of waste each year, including 79,000 tonnes of food waste (nine percent total food waste from the sector). Food establishments produce 873,800 tonnes of waste each year, including 173,000 tonnes of food waste (19 percent total food waste from the sector).
Recent research estimates that 20% (or 11 million tonnes) of all the food produced in Canada annually becomes avoidable food loss or waste – food that could have been eaten, but was instead landfilled, incinerated or managed as organic waste (Green Key Canada, June 2022).
